Let's Tell Starbucks to transition to gender neutral bathrooms worldwide.
Going the bathroom is a basic necessity, but many transgender people live in fear of harassment and violence. Starbucks claims that it is L.G.B.T friendly, but it still has discriminatory gender-segregated bathrooms in almost all of its locations worldwide.
If Starbucks wants to support the transgender community it should start by showing it and lead the movement towards gender-neutral bathrooms.
Why is this important?
Bathrooms have a long history of being the battleground for many movements, including the African American rights and disability movements. The fight for gender-neutral restrooms has emerged as the latest civil rights issue in the L.G.B.T community, particularly among people who identify as transgender.
We may take the simple act of finding a public bathroom for granted, but many transgender people have reported planning their days around where and when they can go. According to a study released by the University of Massachusetts the biggest issue facing transgender college students was finding a safe public space to use the restroom.
With over 23,450 locations Starbucks is one of the biggest coffee shops in the world. Starbucks claims to be L.G.B.T friendly and promotes an “unconditional acceptance” for the transgender community.
A few years ago Starbucks switched over its Washington D.C. locations to gender-neutral bathrooms. But now we are asking Starbucks to take it even further--make the transition to gender-neutral bathrooms in all of your locations worldwide.
